With the South Korean productions in particular, Netflix has already placed some real highlights in its program. "Squid Game" is no exception. The nine-part series is really tough. It's basically a nasty exaggeration of what reality shows like the jungle camp offer.

456 people, all of whom are highly indebted and hardly have any alternatives, are invited to take part in a six-day tournament. There is a game every day - a breeze. But the stakes are high. Because whoever loses dies. But the potential profit is also high and would enable a carefree life.

These people now have to ask themselves: are they ready for the game or do they want to abandon it. And if they break it off, is their everyday life outside really better than the chance presented to them in this game?

  • The story line of a reality shows proven worth to binge as it has more intriguing elements to enjoy.
  • The screenplay is amazingly crafted to keep the storyline in pace to have the breath-taking moment all along.
  • The South Korean leading actors are damn good. Even with little background information, they build up three-dimensional figures whose fate one is interested in. This also happens in a highly emotional way. The sixth episode is one that turns the protagonists, but also the viewer through the emotional meat grinder. This is great drama in the midst of an environment that is deadly.
  • The games are pleasantly weird and bizarre because they are all children's games. Accordingly, the show here also works with bright colors that sometimes bite each other and create an almost surreal ambience. Then there is the music, which at times reminds of watching a horror movie.
  • The nine episodes are just too good to bang. You only have to survive the second episode, which is basically completely superfluous because it reveals nothing noteworthy about the characters and leaves a standstill at an early point in the series.

"Squid Game" is a crisp series with great actors, interesting characters, a fascinating ambience and games that are fascinating in their deadly simplicity. The games work according to the system of common reality TV shows on television, only that the consequences are more fatal. All in all: South Korean entertainment at a high level again.

PS: Please watch the movie on a high definition or 4K enabled screen with Dolby surrounded speakers to feel the aura. I watched the series with High definition with HDR enabled screen along with Dolby surround speakers.
