Mookuthi Amman is a Tamil movie released on 14th November 2020 as an exclusive OTT release in Disney+Hotstar. The movie was written and directed by RJ Balaji in his directorial debut. Co-directed by N. J. Saravanan, the film stars Nayanthara and Balaji in the lead role, with Urvashi, Smruthi Venkat, Madhu Mailankody, Abinaya, Moulee, and Ajay Ghosh in supporting roles.

God flicks were very famous in the 90’s period. The movie-like Amman flooded with the family audience there will be an idol employed in every cinema entrance symbolizes a deity movie is screening in that theatre. The same got died out due to the evolution of TV serials with a similar genre. Mookuthi Amman stepped into the new era with the same longstanding genre found entertaining. It increases the expectations of what is going to be.

RJ Balaji is famous for his satire. We have witnessed the same in his LKG movie. Mookuthi Amman is not inferior to it, ensures the same with the topping of bringing the beautiful god to earth. The flick is predominantly about the fake godman or a demigod and their depraved activities although considered that is moral.

Engels Ramasamy (RJ Balaji) is a young news journalist working for an unfamous TV channel in the Nagercoil district. He tried to reveal a fake godman called Bhagavathi Baba (Ajay Ghosh) scams for the past six years. But due to his not as much of channel reach, it departed into thin air. He lives with his mother (Urvashi), grandfather (Mouli), and three sisters. His father deserted their family a long time back. So, he is the one who is taking care of his family. The family faces continuous to have bad luck. So, they decided to visit the family deity Mookuthi Amman once to seek god’s grace for good luck.

His family deity gave her presence before him and made him realize he is the god-chosen-child and asks him to make her temple famous. Meanwhile, Baba plans to acquire the places around Mookuthi Amman temple to build a religious capital called Panchavanam. It made Engels Ramasamy angry as he was in an uproar for the last six years to stop it. He sides with his family deity Mookuthi Amman decides to expose Baba. The rest forms the story of Mookuthi Amman.

RJ Balaji knows the pulse of his populaces, made a parody drama with an emotional garnish. He enlightens about the superstition towards godman, respecting our women and compliments them, Importance of family deity, the purpose of devoting gods, and of course, the prime which I like is the strategy of temples and their prasathams. It needs guts to showcase something which is already engraving the human world. Hats off to RJ Balaji for doing it.

The acting portrayal of Urvashi was spellbinding bends herself and gave sweep shot in both emotional and humor scenes. Ajay Ghosh portrays as Bhagavathi Baba, imitates all the characters perfectly. The characterization of Mookuthi Amman as Nayanthara was sparkling in her scene presence. She is used limitedly only for pulling the audience. RJ Balaji was fresh can see his diligence on the screen.

The songs and background score are upright and drifting along with the screenplay. CG is satisfactory. The dialogs and timing comedies are concrete and engaging.

Overall, to show something moral and necessary, we need marketing to pull the crowd. It worked out in the case of Mookuthi Amman. The movie was one time watchable.
