LOCKUP (2020)

An Average thriller for a weekend.

My VR Critique Meter:

  • Released Date: 14th Aug 2020
  • Genre: Crime, Thriller
  • Runtime: 105mins
  • Language: Tamil
  • Subtitles: Yes
  • Streaming Portal: Zee5

Lockup, released in Zee5 as direct OTT premiere, Venkat Prabhu, Vaibhav Reddy, Eswari Rao, Vani Bhojan, and Poorna in lead roles, Movie is directed by a debut director S.G.Charles. The movie has a runtime of 105mins.

Lockup is revolving around the ECR area of Chennai city, where Inspector Sampath (Mime Gopi) was murdered in his house and Sub-Inspector Moorthy (Venkat Prabhu) arrested the killer on spot. Sub-Inspector Moorthy is one of the seniors of the station expecting to get promoted. As an add-on, he is on a leash to solve it forcefully which the viewers can witness in the screen from the start. Also, PC Vasanth (Vaibhav) who was appreciated by all department seniors for his bravery expecting to get promoted. Since there was a limitation of one person to get promoted from a single station, Moorthy planned to use Vasanth as a baitfish for making his things aligned.

Inspector Ilavarasi (Eswari Rao) taking additional charge of the murdered inspector police station. Ilavarasi found discrepancies in the reports of the murdered Inspector and started to investigate from scratch as the case has to be closed within a day due to heavy pressure. Meanwhile, A lady Mallika (Poorna) was found dead under the ECR bridge. Who killed inspector Sampath? Does the dead lady involve in the murder of Sampath? Do Moorthy and Vasanth involved in the murder? What happened next is the remaining flick.

The movie Lockup is basically comes under the whodunit genre but the viewers can guess who will be the killer as it pins the person who is involved. The script is solid to keep us embraced but it fails to put in the narrative. The movie started with Ilavarasi who was asked by her superior to take additional charge in another inspector’s station but not shown who that inspector was and when she was taking charge, there were plenty of pictures spread out on the table, for viewers it was X’s pictures. There the narrative got nudged. It made right in the next scene by showing who was Sampath? Who was Mallika? The movie is intertwined with new twists which makes it gripping but the fun of guessing cards was mislaid due to the exposure of guessing cards unintentionally. The climax was eccentric which makes the whole movie dissipates.

The background score by Arrol Correli, known for the movie Pisassu: He has done a plausible score for the movie. But not near to his previous accomplishment. The performances of Venkat Prabhu and Easwari Rao was appreciable. Vaibhav, who was shown as a quiet cop who turns into a new cop after his tough times, but still his performances are notable but not engaging one. The entire movie was braced only on the performances of the cast and the storyline.

Overall, the movie Lockup is one of the average thriller crime genres in Kollywood cinema. If the screenplay adapted the writing properly surely this movie will be a very good murder mystery. The runtime is 100mins, it will give a good time pass movie for a weekend.
