Into the Night is the debut Bulgarian series, is all about an apocalypse which was happening all around the world, based on a novella “The Old Axolotl” by Polish author Jacek Dukaj. The series has six episodes with a suspenseful fiction kept with the same pace for 40mins. Post-apocalypse kind of series is already witnessed from many series, where how people are struggling to survive. Into the night also tells the same and might join the club if the series continued.

The series is starting with a romantic scene between Sylvie (Pauline Etienne) and his boyfriend, suddenly waking up from the kissing dream and found out that she was late to catch a midnight flight to Moscow from Brussels. She was speeding up to the airport carrying her boyfriend’s ashes in her backpack and finally boarded into the flight to Moscow. Terenzio (Stefano Cassetti), who claims to be with NATO, very tensely and desperately buys a ticket to “anywhere west of here.” A first-class passenger Richard a.k.a Rik (Jan Bijvoet) complains that an elderly man in a wheelchair gets to board before he does. A famous social media influencer Ines (Alba Gaia Bellugi) says her friend made a choking sound in the middle of a call and hung up; she’s worried, but her friend has a dark sense of humor, she says to a concerned onlooker Ayaz (Mehmet Kurtulus).

Survivors of Apocalypse

Terenzio, seeing people dying in the television news in the airport, he grabs a gun from the armed guard and taking the Moscow flight under his control. While taking the control of the plane, he shot in the co-pilot's hand Mathieu (Laurent Capelluto). Only a few were loaded into the plane with one flight attendant and a co-pilot. Since there was no pilot, Sylvie, an ex-air force helicopter pilot getting into the role of flying the plane. Terenzio explains about the apocalypse that, if a sun touches any organic matter, it will be dead. Hence, he wants the plane to travel west to New York to avoid the sunrise. Both Sylvia and Mathieu are skeptical about the end of the world claims of Teranzio, they convinced themselves and taken the flight to Iceland as the requirement of fuel is more to reach New York. The flight was busted with no communications and wifi, hence, everyone in the flight are blacked out from the outside world. The secrets about the end of the world between the three in the cockpit eventually learn to know to other passengers who don’t believe the words of Teranzio, they locked him up into the bathroom. When they nearing Iceland airport, they found a mass of flames and mountain-like dead bodies, hence they turn back to Scotland. Once they landed there, they got the signal back and the truth about the apocalypse revealed to the fellow passengers. What happens next, will the passengers have survived or not? Is the remaining flick. The writer has given it in a fast-beating screenplay which will embrace us till the end.

Sylvie & Mathieu

Each character has a backstory about how they end up on this flight. the series also explains about the pain and hindrance revolves around the people inside the flight. Laura (Babetida Sadjo), as the nurse-caretaker, she shows more equanimity when she thinks about everyone, and less racism than most of the people on the plane. Sylvie — Her acting was indeed matured and it was staged one step at a time. The plot was shown as a shadow not given too much care towards the apocalypse by showing it instead the creator have shown a glimpse of the fallen dead in the airport and in the climax.

The title music was great, something ominous in it and of course the title card also, like a flight kind of animation. Also, the plane will be returned to Brussels after a week of frequent travel for checking the safe bunker in NATO building suggested by Terenzio. Who is he actually? And what is the cure to it and how it occurred? I sincerely do not know what is there in the novel.  Since Netflix announced that there is a season 2, we can expect these questions to be answered.

Overall, it is a nerve-racking series that will make us sit on the edge of our seat. Watch it in French with subtitles ON as English dubbed was horrifying.
